The Columbian mammoth evolved from the Steppe mammoth which entered the Americas around 1.5million years ago. It was distributed from the Northern United states south to Costa Rica.
This 10 tonne, 4m tall elephant ancestor died out approximately 11,500 years ago leaving the Asian elephant as its closest living descendant.
