The Stegodon is a primitive elephant ancestor roaming through parts of Africa, Asia and the islands of Indonesia from around 12 million years ago with localised populations surviving all the way up to around 4000 years ago existing alongside modern humans.
Whilst stegodons were some of the largest proboscideans, the species found throughout Indonesia exhibited island dwarfism and ranged in size from as little as 250kg up to 2 tonnes depending on species.
