The domestic chinchilla, is a hybrid of Chinchilla lanigera and Chinchilla chinchilla. This hybrid does not occur naturally. In the wild chinchillas have been hunted almost to extinction for the fur trade, they have recently been downgraded from critically endangered to endangered after some successful re-population attempts.
