Elephas antiquus the straight tusked elephant, formerly Palaeoloxodon antiquus, was a very large elephant ancestor believed to be a direct ancestor to the dwarf elephants that inhabited the Mediterranean. This species grew to over 4m tall at the shoulder and possibly up to 15 tonnes. Skeletal remnants of E. antiquus are rare this is believed to be due to predation by early humans.
