Hysterocrates hercules is a large, fossorial tarantula native to West Africa, particularly Nigeria. It inhabits humid forested regions where it constructs deep burrows in soil or occupies natural subterranean retreats. This species has a robust build with dark brown to black coloration and powerful chelicerae adapted for digging. Primarily nocturnal, it preys on insects and other small invertebrates near its burrow entrance. Like other Old World theraphosids, it lacks urticating hairs and relies on defensive displays and medically significant venom for protection.
