Pterinochilus murinus is a terrestrial Old World tarantula native to eastern Africa. It inhabits dry savannas and scrublands, constructing silk-lined burrows or occupying natural ground retreats. Coloration varies by locality, ranging from brown to the well-known bright orange form. Highly defensive and extremely fast, it relies on potent venom rather than urticating hairs for protection. It is an opportunistic predator, feeding primarily on insects and other small invertebrates.
